Jesus says Manchester City need something extra to win the Champions League

Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus believes the Cityzens need the extra something in order to go on to win the Champions League title. The Mancunian giants have not gone beyond the quarter-final of the elite competition under manager Pep Guardiola while they have reached the last four on just one occasion in the Sheikh Mansour era.

In a recent interview with Champions Journal, Jesus said: “The truth is that to win the Champions League you need an extra something – and this team has been maturing. When I’m in the tunnel waiting to go onto the field and I hear the song, I get very emotional. I remember my past, when I wanted to be a football player. I would sometimes skip school to watch some games – I hope my mother doesn’t see this interview! To be able to play today, to make my mark in this competition, makes me very happy.”

The Cityzens endured a disappointing 2019/2020 campaign where they ended up winning only the League Cup. They were far off from defending their Premier League title as they finished 18 points behind champions Liverpool. Meanwhile, they suffered a rather surprise defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final and the same was the case in the Champions League where they were beaten by Lyon in the quarter-final stage.
The club have booked their spot in the round of 16 of the current Champions League campaign with 12 points (from four games) and they can seal the top position on Tuesday night against Porto. The Cityzens beat the Portuguese champions 3-1 at the Etihad during the reverse group meeting. Porto are currently three points behind the Cityzens and need a 2-0 win at the Estadio do Dragao to move ahead of the Premier League giants on the head-to-head away goals.
